About
Based in NYC, Shreya Sunderram is an educator and scholar-activist who studies how youth-driven curriculum, worldbuilding, and counter-schooling are keys to challenging dominant history classrooms.
Shreya serves as the K-12 Project Director at the Asian American/Asian Research Institute, where she is the Director of The Localized Histories Project, a youth history collective building NYC’s first ever AAPI Studies curriculum through youth participatory historiography. Her publications include co-written pieces with youth about the state of colonial curriculum in NY State history classrooms. LHP’s most recent piece, entitled Localized Histories and Pedagogial Revolutions, was published in Educational Studies, and received the Jean Anyon prize at the American Educational Research Association Conference.
Her dissertation, entitled “Anchoring Ourselves in History: South Asian Diasporic Movements of Study and Struggle,” studies the impact of learning radical movement history on the critical consciousness and identity formation of South diasporic Asian youth today. Shreya holds a BA in Political Science from Barnard College, Columbia University, and an MA in Sociology and Education from New York University. She was a high school history teacher in New York City public schools for seven years.
Outside of academia, Shreya enjoys escaping into other worlds via sci-fi and fantasy (reading, writing, watching), and going for long walks in Prospect Park. Contact her at shreyasunderram[@]gmail[.com].
